Getting to Know the Campus

Because there are five different campuses, it is sometimes confusing when trying to get somewhere, or get things done.  Here are some maps and people that you should talk to.

Tabling

Tabling is different depending on the Campus.  Most often you need to call facilities Services and they will set the table up for you outside the dinning hall.  To table at Scripps you will need to go to Sarlo and fill out the paper work.  To table at Pitzer call Moya Carter and she will tell you what to do.  It is a good idea to get to know the deans of activities, since they will tell you all about the red tape.  For more information about the tabling contact dinning services or the deans, and they will let you know how to get to where you want to go.  The issue with tabling is that it makes the most sense to table in front of a dinning hall, so times are limited.  You can also go inside the dinning halls and set up a table the eating area.  This works better in some dinning halls then in others.

Getting into the Residence Halls

Getting into the residence halls is more of a challenge then you would think.  Again, it is different for each campus.  Also Residence Advisors have different titles on each campus.  Below are the people that I talked to this past year.

CMC-Residence Life Coordinator, David Castro, x77293 david.castro@claremontmckenna.edu

Harvey Mudd-(Proctors) Assistant Dean of Residence Life, Guy Gerbick, Platt Campus Center, x18301 ggerbick@hmc.edu

Pitzer-Mead Hall Director, La Fayette Baker, x74110 lafayette_baker@pitzer.edu -Sanborn Hall Director, Jeanette Anderson, x74118 jeanette_anderson@pitzer.edu -Holden Hall Director, Heather Simmons, x74110 heather_simmons@pitzer.edu

Pomona-Coordinator of Residence Halls and Programming, Brian Cross, x71778 brian_cross@pomona.edu

Scripps-Stacy Buchwald, sbuchwal@scrippscollege.edu Hall Directors x74307 or call Sarlo

You will probably want to go to a RA meeting to introduce yourself, give them some chocolate, and tell them the kinds of programs that you would like to do.  In order to get into one of the meetings you need to contact the people above.  This year most of the meetings were on Mondays.

Places to Program

It is important to know the coffee shops on campus.  I had a lot of programs at the Motley, which is on Scripps campus.  Also try the Hub at CMC, the Coop at Pomona and the many others around the different campuses.

For lunch, eating in the dinning halls is not bad at all.  The best food on Campus is in Mallott (Scripps).  McConnell (Pitzer) has a lot of organic food.  They also have a nice meeting room area.  Oldenborg (Pomona) is the international dorm, and they have a Hebrew table once a week.  This year it was on Mondays.  This is also where we have Passover Seders and meals.

If you are looking to get off campus with students, a good coffee shop in the Village is Some Crust.  For sandwiches, Full of Life is great, and for Falafel check out Sakas.  Some of my most successful events were dinner at Buca di Beppo.

Rooms on Campus can be a little tricky.  Since each school has its own bureaucracy, it is different for each school.

CMC- Check out the Athenaeum.  They always have wonderful speakers that come, but they also have a smaller room.  See if you can co-sponsor a speaker.

Harvey Mudd-Lind has a big screen television that you can use for programs.  Low key events are the best kind to have here.  In East Dorm every night there is a group of students that watch Star Trek, see if you can bring them Pizza.

PITZER-The Grove house is a great place to have an organic dinner.  Also you can use Avery auditorium (the Jewish Acting Group used it for a play)

POMONA-Check out the Smith Campus Center, most rooms are not reserve able, but you can have programs in there anyway.  They also have a game room that you can rent out, which has pool tables and many other games.  Also, the JCSC office is in Walker, and right done the hall is the Women's Union.  They have a wonderful room.

SCRIPPS-Mallott Commons/Sarlo has a great room upstairs.  It has a TV and some videos that you can rent.  There are also some great lawns to do outside programs on.  This is the hardest campus to do anything on.  You need to fill out a lot of paper work a couple weeks before you want to do anything.
