Engagement is very similar to outreach. It requires reaching out to a broad population to get them to an event. However, engagement takes outreach one step further. It works on a more personal and individual level. Meeting students where they are, instead of asking them to come to you. Through tabling in front of the dinning halls, having one-on-one coffee dates, eating meals with students, and brining programs to their residence halls, it is amazing what unique and wonderful relationships will be formed. Through this ground work, you can help students become the voices behind the programs. Right now, at Claremont most of the students are engagement students. It is easier for them to come to things, instead of planning things. This is why the ground work is so important. In building a trusting relationship with the students, they will soon want to help you do things that interest them. From helping you they may then start to get the initiative to do most of the planning themselves, and go from engagement to empowerment students. |
